Earlier in July, Childish Gambino released a new song called “Feels Like Summer”. The easy vibe of the song points to the slower pace of life that many people experience in the summer. However, this song isn’t about rest and relaxation. Looking more closely at the lyrics, we are pointed to issues like the implications of climate change on wildlife and the growing scarcity of clean water in our world. It’s safe to say these lyrics are definitely different than typical summer-vibe songs!
You may find yourself sitting by the pool or around a fire with a group of friends throughout these last few weeks of summer. During your conversations, what if you asked each other about the different kinds of media you’ve been exposed to over the past couple months?
Taking it a step further in light of Gambino’s, “Feels Like Summer”, consider reflecting on:
- What explicit or implicit messages are these songs or shows seeking to convey?
- What is your reaction and/or response to these messages?
- Do you think music and media are good avenues for artists and content creators to express their sentiments about world issues? Why or why not?
