May is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Sexual assault is a serious and traumatic issue facing many individuals – especially teens and young adults – throughout our nation. In a report, the Canadian Women’s Foundation highlights that “the rate of sexual assault for Canadians age 15 to 24 is 18 times higher  than that of Canadians age 55 and older.”

So, what exactly is sexual assault? It can be defined as “any type of sexual activity without consent.” This can range from unwanted sexual comments to forceful or violent sexual activity against someone’s will. It’s important to understand that consent cannot be given in relationships where one individual is in a position of authority or power over the other individual.
