Pornography: Our Choices & Our Voices
Wednesday March 21st, 2018
Technology has taken off in recent years! Most people have a smartphone housing many apps like Instagram, Facebook, and Whatsapp that keep them connected with friends and family all the time. Having more ways to connect with others is a great development! There can be dangers, though, if your use of your device encourages you to disconnect from certain realities. This is one of the possible negative impacts due to pornography becoming more accessible online.
Our choices have a way of adding up. Although a choice we make may not appear to initially impact us in a harmful way, it may present the potential of harming us, as well as others, in the long run. For example, watching pornography once in a while may not greatly impact the viewer, however, it’s important to remember that real people are being subjected to scripted, choreographed, and explicit sexual activity – and in some instances, against their will.
So, how can we take a stand and use our voices against the realities of an industry that can sexually objectify people?
Here’s a few suggestions to help get started:
- Check out Fight the New Drug’s website to learn more about the harmful effects that pornography has on the brain, heart, and society as a whole.
- Engage with media that portrays every individual as a valued human being, not as sexual objects to be used.
- If you can’t find any media like this, create your own!
